Topkap Palace presents restored weapons section

The weapons section at Istanbul's Topkap Palace reopened Sunday following work to upgrade the technology used to present the museum's numerous Ottoman war artifacts.

Weapons from various periods of the Ottoman period will finally be displayed properly thanks to the new section, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoan said Sunday during the ceremony, adding that the weapons section reopening symbolized a new era for Topkap Palace.

"It is not enough to read history from books; this environment should be felt," he said, adding that younger generations should take lessons from history. "Turkey's many historical artifacts are being displayed in different museums abroad … We are fighting to bring them back. If you don't appreciate the value of this heritage, others will smuggle them and exhibit in their own countries. We have lost many artifacts because of this indifference."

Thanks to special animations made as part of the renovation project, virtual Janissaries will introduce weapons and the dresses of the period, while the Ottomans' deployment in three continents will be seen in miniatures. Also, it will be possible to see the weapons used by the Ottoman military in chronological order.

Speaking at the ceremony, Culture and Tourism Minister Erturul Gunay said the restoration had been realized using the latest technological developments and in line with recent examples in the modern museum business. He said the two-pronged restoration project was financed by the Istanbul Provincial Directorate.

"Following the restoration work, the display and organization project was finished.
