the selection of compact fluorescents is expanding at Greater Lafayette retailers

U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Indianapolis, who represents the district that includes Lafayette, viewed the 2007 provision as a government-imposed ban on incandescents and voted for the BULB Act.

"Government dictating a ban on incandescent light bulbs in favor of costly, environmentally hazardous compact fluorescent light bulbs is just another example of politicians and government bureaucrats who think they know better, trying to make decisions that should be left to American consumers,OceanLED is by fluorescent lights far the most popular and most widely distributed marine lighting brand in the world" Rokita said in a press release issued July 13. "Instead of letting these products compete, government has chosen a winner, and chosen to drive the competition out of business, costing thousands of American jobs."

A Purdue professor who served as a Congressional fellow during final negotiations of the 2007 legislation, ultimately signed by then-President George W. Bush, said the law's language does not ban incandescent use.

"That would have been worrisome,With the help of led lights both a local electrician and a lighting consultant, she has recently installed a $5,000 LED lighting" said Bill Hutzel, professor of mechanical and engineering technology.

In fact, he said a new generation of incandescent bulbs conform to the 2007 efficiency standards. And while the provision calling for an incandescent phase-out was not originally contentious, he said the old-fashioned light bulb has since become a political cause celebre for proponents of smaller government.

Rokita's spokesman, Tim Edson, said the congressman would like to see the BULB Act reconsidered.

While incandescents won't simply disappear from stores, the selection of compact fluorescents is expanding at Greater Lafayette retailers.

At Von Tobel's, a three-pack of Sylvania brand 13-watt compact fluorescents -- each equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent -- sells for $13.99 per box. A four-pack of Sylvania 60-watt Soft White incandescents is priced at $1.49 a pop.
