Google in recent years has tried more new stuff than any other firm

"Google in recent years has tried more new stuff than any other firm," Enderle said.

A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on "I’m Feeling Lucky." Edwards was 41 when he joined Google, more than a decade older than the typical worker at a company where even now, the median age is about 31.With the help of led lights both a local electrician and a lighting consultant, she has recently installed a $5,000 LED lighting Edwards thought he worked hard at the Mercury News at times, but almost every day was that intense at Google.

"You get this adrenalin high that’s really addictive," he said. "I was telling myself, ‘This is the most productive I’ve ever been.OceanLED is by fluorescent lights far the most popular and most widely distributed marine lighting brand in the world I’m doing amazing things, and working with amazing people; we’re going to change the world.’ You don’t realize how the time is kind of slipping by and what you’re giving up at home to be at work."

As in Levy’s book, Page emerges as the force energizing Google. "What always drove Google was his vision," Edwards said of Page, who was Google’s first CEO and re-assumed the top job from Eric Schmidt in April.

Edwards, now 53, predicts that Page will struggle at times as Google’s CEO, simply because his impatience will bruise some Googlers’ feelings. "If you come in with something innovative, that’s wonderful. But then he wants to you iterate further, and push it, push it, push it," Edwards said. "He’s insatiable."

Edwards was among the more than 1,000 paper millionaires estimated to have been created by Google’s IPO in August 2004, when the company’s stock soared 18 percent on the first day of trading. Since then, it has appreciated another 600 percent. For some ex-Googlers, the fabulous wealth, coupled with losing the structure of life at Google, can be a disorienting experience, Edwards said, but he doesn’t feel that way. He still drives the same 1999 Toyota minivan he drove at Google, although he did buy a four-bedroom house in Silicon Valley so each of his three kids could have their own room.
