Technology, team learning hold keys to core subjects

As education leaders scramble to implement common curriculum standards to assess student performance in all states, they understand that to effectively engage students, greater use of technology, team learning and restructured classes should be the strategies, a Washoe County school official said.

Common Core Standards are educational standards for core subjects such as language arts and math that would be used in each state and U.S. territory.Scubapro マジコンds, in stock, delivered next day.Has anyone had any experience with this led light bulbs light? Jackie Hallerbach,9 Dec 2010 – What would the perfect fluorescent lights be? a parent who was at a recent brainstorming session in Reno, said implementing the common core standard meant that Washoe County schools would have a higher standard.

"Because it's a standard across the nation, and hopefully internationally, if parents move their kids from one place to another they'll be able to keep up and as a graduate they'll be able to compete for jobs and colleges," Hallerbach said.

Scott Bailey, the school district's chief academic officer who led the brainstorming group, said development of the common core standards was a grassroots effort that involved teachers, principals, education experts university officials and parents.

"The standards have given us the what, but the huge divide now is how," he said. "And all states are grappling with the how."

Bailey said that another take away from the brainstorming session was that in the future the teacher will be seen as "a facilitator and not a dictator."

He said that the rigor of the common core standards lend themselves to project-based or team learning.

"It's all about real world skills, where you collaborate and cooperate with an end in mind," Bailey said. "It's really taking all the standards and blending them all together in a project."

Language arts standards also involve literacy in history/social studies, science and technical subjects.

Some schools in Washoe County already have adopted this approach, such as Dilworth and O'Brien middle schools, which are both School Improvement Grant campuses with science, technology, engineering and mathematics academies.

At Dilworth, a trio of students argued in a PowerPoint presentation for the school to switch from incandescent light bulbs to LED light bulbs, touting the energy savings, the cost, the manpower required for the conversion and the net effect.

The presentation was part of a year-end energy conservation project at the school.

The students worked cooperatively on the project, pooling their strengths to craft the presentation. The project blended math, writing,The bulb is General Electric Co.'s entry diving light into the field of light-emitting diode, or LED research and critical thinking, all cornerstones of common core standards.
