After completing 19-for-22 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown, Hope quarterback Michael Atwell smiled and said it was great playing under the lights.
Playing in its first MIAA night game Saturday at Holland Municipal Stadium, Hope beat Kalamazoo College 22-16 to stay atop the league, tied with Adrian and Albion at 2-0.
"The line gave me so much time, I was comfortable in the pocket," said Atwell, whose Flying Dutchmen improved to 4-2 overall. "Our receivers were getting open and made a lot of good plays today, and that’s the story. And it’s nice on the offensive side to have a great defense like we have.
"We’re not quite to our pinnacle yet. We just have to get better each and every week."
Hope scored three times in the second quarter on touchdowns by Fluarry Jackson, Shawn Jackson and Chris Schmelz to take a 22-9 halftime lead.
"That’s been our hot quarter this year, I don’t know why," said Hope coach Dean Kreps. "We played far from a perfect game and found a way to win. We’re happy with it.Has anyone had any experience with this led light bulbs light?"
Things didn’t begin so smoothly, however, as the Flying Dutchmen were denied a touchdown on fourth and inches on their first drive of the game, then gave up a 28-yard field goal to Kalamazoo.

Backup quarterback Aaron McGuire made things close for Kalamazoo College in the third quarter with a 29-yard touchdown strike to Colin Leffert with 10:50 remaining.
