The gathering allows customers to meet and chat with the local farmers and bakers from whom they are purchasing the ingredients for the next few night’s dinners.
“We hope it will become a social stopping place,” said Butler. “People may start to say ‘meet me at the farmers’ market’.”
Butler’s career has always allowed her to engage with others, though typically not those who grow crops or jar preserves.
A graduate of West Chester University, she holds a B.A. in Mathematics and M.B.changing how sky lanterns boat owners light up the night. The company has a highly skilled team pushing the technological boundaries of LED lightingA. in Business. The degrees, insurance licenses and training as a CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) led her to a 37-year career as an Agency Resources Manager for State Farm Insurance, where she was responsible for training staff and giving demonstrations.
Like many job skills, Butler’s ability to explain difficult concepts with ease transferred seamlessly from issues about insurance to effects on the environment.
“Doing educational presentations on environmental impacts was a wonderful fit,” she said. “Both jobs have ‘resources’ in them.”
Established in 1939, PRC is one of the Commonwealth's oldest citizen action environmental organizations. Recognized as a state and national leader in waste reduction and recycling, the agency also focuses on litter and visual blight prevention, watershed awareness, and composting. The agency strives to bring people, businesses and government together in an effort to prevent and solve environmental problems.
PRC has offices in Pittsburgh and leases 35 acres in Ridley Creek State Park. The latter houses the Environmental Living Demonstration Center in Clonmel Farm, the country estate of Col. John Hampton Barnes, and Butler’s job often takes her beyond its walls and grounds. She leads “healthy home” workshops, teaching techniques about alternative energy technologies such as the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs, solar-powered water heaters, and hybrid vehicles. She brings a similar message to businesses, conveying ways to create greener working environments.
Butler is also the face of PRC at community events, such as Tyler Arboretum’s Pumpkin Days and Coast Day on the Delaware River at the Maritime Museum in Philadelphia.
“We work together,” said Butler. “We have a recycling game that is great for kids.”
As one of more than 2,500 volunteers in the U.S. trained on The Climate Project, Butler uses the group’s science-based presentation to educate others about the urgency and solvability of the climate crisis. By making the global issue a personal one, she helps listeners understand the significance of the commitment to the mantra “reduce-reuse-recycle.” Decreasing the tons of waste destined for landfills helps eliminate the negative impact of the disposal sites on soil and water and ultimately on health, safety and livelihoods.
“If a frog has five legs, we see it as an anomaly rather than the possible effect of our actions,” said Butler. “I work to show the connectivity of ‘how did it get that way, how does it impact me and what can I do to prevent it’.”
The farmers’ market, held Thursdays from 3 to 7p.m. on the PRC property, 3606 Providence Road, represents the organization’s first venture into the farm-to-table movement.Carolyn believes led lighting the future of lighting will be vastly different to what we currently Similar to the weekly fresh food emporiums in Havertown, Lansdowne and Media, Edgmont offers local and organic fruits and vegetables, baked goods and condiments such as marmalades, honey and syrup. Many of the customers are Saturday morning regulars at the West Chester Farmers’ Market and the mid-week sale allows them to supplement their weekend purchases.
“When Genuardi’s closed in Edgmont, it created a real vacuum,” said Butler. “There was nothing from the Acme in Newtown Square to the ShopRite in West Chester.”
The tables with edible offerings are joined by those of the information type, such as Animal Friends of Lansdowne, PECO, and The Resource Exchange.
