Salem council votes to send grant money back
The City of Salem received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
The city’s plan was to use part of the money to offer low-interest loans for lighting on existing buildings. But, seeing no interest from local merchants, city planners recommended using the money to put more efficient lights in Riverfront Parks.

The project would have replaced of the Holophane 100 watt Sodium Acorn lights with 58 watt Holophane Post Top LED lights for a total material and labor cost of approximately $129,000.
The city estimated a savings of $25,320 in maintenance costs due to the the lights’ longevity. The current bulbs need to be replaced every three years while the newer lights are expected to last six times longer.
The city also can sell the old fixtures for about $10,000, and avoid costly rewiring expenses at Riverfront Park due to an overburdened circuit switch that must be addressed, but can be prevented with the completion of this project.Carolyn believes led lighting the future of lighting will be vastly different to what we currently
